California State Board Barber Practice Exam

Same story as California's cosmetology license: the barber exam dropped its hands-on practical component as of January 1, 2022. It's written-only now, administered by PSI on behalf of the California Board of Barbering and Cosmetology, through the state's BreEZe application system.

The current format:

If your study material describes a skills demonstration alongside the written test, it's describing a format California retired years ago. Every point that used to come from hands-on evaluation now rides entirely on this one written exam, there's no separate practical score to fall back on if a knowledge area is shaky.

Ten of your 95 questions are unscored pretest items, mixed in without being flagged, so treating every question as if it counts is the only reliable approach since you can't tell which ones don't.

The written content still reflects the skills a barber needs on the job, sanitation and safety standards, cutting and styling technique knowledge, chemical service procedures, and California-specific regulations, it's just tested through questions now instead of a live demonstration.

Being offered in five languages is worth knowing if English isn't your strongest testing language, that's a genuine option here, not something every state licensing exam provides.

Your training program still includes hands-on instruction, that part of your education hasn't changed. What's different is that the state no longer separately grades your technique in a testing environment, so your written exam performance now carries the full weight your practical exam used to share.

Our practice questions are built for the current 95-question written format, the one California actually uses now.
